Jasper (which is actually Quartz)Quartz is one of the worlds most abundant minerals, it occurs in a wide variety of rock types and environments. More than 40 types of minerals have been found as inclusions. Rock crystals frequently contain cavities with bubbles, creating what are known as two phase inclusions. The crystalline quartz variety include: amethyst, smoky quartz, citrine, rose quartz, milky quartz and blue quartz. Quartzite is a granular variety that includes the gem aventurine. The coloured, quartz varieties generally occur in veins that develop over a long period of time. As a result of such slow crystal growth, many crystals achieve high levels of perfection and produce enormous pieces. The only colour varieties that do not form such large crystals are amethyst and rose quartz.
The Greeks referred to quartz as krystallos meaning ice. They assumed quartz crystals were ice that was frozen so solid that it would not melt, a folklore that persisted into the Middle Ages.
Rock crystal is in fact clear colourless quartz and is the most common gem mineral but because of its poor ability to refract light, it is therefore considered to lack brilliance and is deemed as having a glassy appearance. More commonly rock crystal is used for carvings, chandeliers and of course, crystal balls. The National Gem Collections has the largest known flawless quartz sphere 32.8 cm in diameter and weighting 48.4 kg.
The golden yellow to orange gem variety of quartz is refereed to as Citrine. The name comes from the French and means lemon. Natural citrine crystals are relatively rare.
Most rose quartz crystals appear a deep rose colour. Rose Quartz is typically found in enormous clusters and rarely occurs as simply individual crystals.
Thin layers of fibrous, fine-grained quartz crystals are referred to as chalcedony, which is generally translucent and has a waxy texture. Carnelian is red chalcedony, the red and white variety is called Sardonyx. Agate is also another type of chalcedony which are typically white, grey and yellowish brown to reddish brown. Moss agate is technically not agate, but white to clear chalcedony.
Jasper (which is red to reddish brown colour) is a fine-grained quartz consisting of almost equally sized quartz crystals with a sugary texture and a somewhat dull lustre. Bloodstone is a dark green jasper with blood red flecks.
According to Roman folklore amethyst was coloured purple by the god of wine and was thought to offer protection against drunkenness. It derives its name from a Greek word meaning "not to intoxicate".Agate: Return to nature, Mother Earth guides and protects, enhancing softness and femininity, also a good grounding gem.
Amethyst: Spiritual stone, used to assist in meditation with magical healing powers. Used to develop spirituality, and very useful for preventing the wearer of becoming intoxicated.

Jasper: This stone enhances earthy love and family feelings.
Moss agate: Relieves anxiety and brings peace of mind.
Quartz/Rock crystal: Concentration and true spiritual awakenings are possible with this stone. Healing, protection, peace, happiness, chastity, halting gossip and spirituality are all enriched by the quartz crystal.
